HOW TO CREATE A STYLISH OUTFIT WITHOUT BEING ‘ON TREND’

“Fashions fade, style is eternal.”

Yves Saint Laurent

Being stylish is not about being ‘on trend’, although being ‘on trend’ can be stylish. The important distinction is that whatever is ‘on trend’ or currently ‘in fashion’ changes frequently, but having a distinct style is a combination of your lifestyle, your budget, your taste and what flatters you.

Having a unique style distinguishes you from others, even though what you’re wearing may not be ‘in fashion’.

Creating a stylish outfit is really simple and below are some points to help you discover how, without going outside your wardrobe:

  1. Have a unique twist.
  2. Wear rich, bright colours.
  3. Add a style-staple to your outfit.
  4. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!!!

  1. Have a unique twist: it can be simple, but make sure it’s interesting. My unique twist here is how I styled my hair. It’s fun, different and adds a layer of fascination to this outfit.
  2.  Wear rich, bright colours: basically, go bold or go home. Rich and bright colours always help you stand out, you’ve heard it before – actually, several times and it’s very true!!! In this post, there’s no denying the fire-power of red – my blouse and of course, my ombre braids. I matched my blouse to my hair so the colours could blend and give off a subtle monochromatic vibe.

3. Add a style-staple to your outfit: think edgy black for the rocker babe, gypsy blouse for the bohemian (boho) chic, button-downs (shirts) for the preppy girl and the likes. For someone like me who has a rather eclectic style, I usually dress according to my mood. I was feeling rather free spirited and decided to go with a more bohemian  vibe. The trick is to pair the style-staple with something basic like my skinny blue jeans here.

4. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize: I cannot stress how much accessories elevate an outfit. It’s that extra spice that transforms an outfit from being basic to being stylish. From your choice of bag to your belt, earrings, sunglasses; basically, feel free to pile on jewellery.

Hope this helps you the next time you want to look stylish, but you’re worried you don’t have any ‘one-trend’ item that you love at that moment.
