The little black dress (lbd) has become so iconic, that it needs no introduction at this point. However, the truth is that after a while, it can become too simple or basic, and need a little bit of an edge to spice it up.

The easiest thing to do; short of buying a new dress, is switch it up with a few tricks to make it more interesting and stylish.

For this outfit, my goal was to strike a fun and edgy balance between dressy and casual for my friend’s birthday celebration last month; where I had so much fun catching up with fellow high school alumni.

To spice up your lbd, try the following, like I did in this post:

1. Add an interesting outer wear.

I made my white button-down shirt interesting by tying it into a crop, folding back the sleeves and wearing one half off my shoulder.

2. Wear fun shoes.

Heels, flats, sneakers, whatever you mood dictates. Just make sure your shoes aren’t basic. Think of contrast – fun shoes with a cute dress, edgy shoes with a feminine look, etc. Also, think in colours – avoid wearing black shoes.

3. Play with your hair.

I’ve always loved coloured hair, although I only got on the ombre side recently. However, I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so hair accessories are a good alternative. Play around with them; from fun and coloured barrettes to scarves and puffy headbands; which are all the rage right now.

4. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!!!

Once again, I cannot stress enough, how much you need to accessorize. It really is the final clincher in transforming your outfit from basic to fashionable.

5. Have fun with it…

Most importantly, make sure you have fun with your outfit. There’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable in what you wear.

Fun fact: I had black spaghetti and it was delish. I had a poll on my insta stories and 62% voted ‘NO’ to ever trying black spaghetti. I think it’s the colour that freaks people out, but trust me, it’s awesome.

“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”
